Table Styles in Excel

Excel already has its own visual table-style editor, built into Excel itself. Excel table styles are a bit different from Word and PowerPoint table styles. Because of that, Table Branding Manager takes a deliberately different approach for Excel files: it doesn't offer a design surface for creating or editing styles from scratch - instead, it's how you bring a style you designed in Word or PowerPoint into Excel. There is some conversion in that process to match the style as good as possible, but you may want to tweak the style with the Excel table style editor. But you will save a lot of time by getting the basics right.

What you'll see for an Excel file

When you open an .xltx/.xltm template or .xlsx/.xlsm workbook, the center panel is replaced with a short explanation instead of the Fill/Borders/Font/Cell padding controls. The style list and the preview panel on the right both still work normally - you can see and preview every style in the file.

What you can still do

  • Rename, Delete, Duplicate, Export, and Set as default all work exactly as they do for Word/PowerPoint files.
  • Import a .ksstyle file - one you exported from a Word or PowerPoint style - to add it to the Excel file. This is the main workflow: design once in Word or PowerPoint, then import the same style into your Excel templates or workbooks.

What's not available

  • Add (a blank new style) - there's nothing to design directly here.
  • Cell padding has no equivalent in Excel's table style format, so it isn't imported.
