The functionality is only as good as the template it runs on. In practice we regularly see templates that look great but cause frustration in use. The check of one template is free and, in most cases, done within a day.

What I assess

Word has more pitfalls than PowerPoint. During a template check I look at the most common issues, but also at things specific to your template:

  • Are the relevant styles present — subheadings, numbered and unnumbered lists at multiple levels?
  • Are styles linked to each other, so Tab and Shift+Tab work for levels?
  • Is the spacing before and after paragraphs set up correctly in the styles?
  • Do headings have the 'keep with next' setting?
  • Is the style gallery cleaned up, with relevant styles in a logical order?
  • Are fonts, colors, and default settings set up correctly?
  • Do images have a suitable resolution for printing without making the file unnecessarily large?
  • Is the positioning of elements in the header and footer correct when switching orientation?
  • Are there unnecessary section breaks that cause surprises?
  • Are table styles defined that match the brand guidelines?
